Rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal cavity mucosa, while sinusitis affects the mucosa inside the nasal sinuses. Though they differ in anatomical locations, the two conditions are closely related. Since the nasal cavity mucosa connects continuously with the sinus mucosa, inflammation in the nasal cavity often spreads to the sinuses, so the two usually occur together.

Under the new medical definition, they are no longer classified separately as rhinitis or sinusitis, but collectively as rhinosinusitis. It is advisable to update your understanding of this condition, as there is no need to strictly distinguish between the two.
Rhinitis and sinusitis are two distinct conditions. Their specific differences are as follows:

  1. Rhinitis mainly affects the nasal cavity, whereas sinusitis refers to inflammation of the four pairs of paranasal sinuses on both sides of the nasal cavity.

  2. They present different clinical symptoms. Nasal congestion and sticky nasal discharge are typical signs of rhinitis. By contrast, sinusitis is mostly characterized by headache, reduced sense of smell and purulent nasal discharge.

  3. They also differ in clinical treatments. Nasal sprays are commonly used for rhinitis to promote drainage and improve nasal ventilation. For sinusitis, aside from drainage improvement, antibiotics are also required for treatment.

In fact, rhinitis may lead to sinusitis, and the core treatment principles are similar. Clinicians adopt nasal medications, nasal irrigation and decongestants to relieve nasal congestion and nasal inflammation. Improving drainage of the sinus ostia can also ease sinus inflammation.

Although rhinitis and sinusitis differ in anatomical locations and were previously regarded as separate illnesses, modern medical theories confirm that they often occur concurrently and are essentially related conditions. The same treatment approaches can be applied to achieve satisfactory therapeutic effects.
